Encouragement
The history of Orchard Inn is one of huge risk and Gods providential timing, certainly not luck.
In the 1960s our Mom and Dad were involved in a small way with local tourism, they would often ride along on a bus that came into the area for the day from the cities as tour guides. Also we would frequently have international students stay at our house because of the interest in Amish culture.
By 1971 our Dad had worked at Kauffmans Orchard approximately 18 years, he was one of their best employees, certainly the hardest worker. At one point he would have been in the Guinness Book of World Records for picking the most Apples in a day, over 300 bushels. An amazing achievement after an accident that broke his back years earlier.
In 1970 he asked to buy one acre of land across the road from where we lived which Kauffmans graciously agreed to. Being the risk taker and maverick that he was Dad borrowed almost 100% of the funds to begin the dream. With no pushback from the township. Back then excavation started on March 1st 1971 and Orchard View Motel opened on April 15. Room rates were $14.00 per night.
Because we were part of a Conservative Mennonite church at the time we did not have any TVs in the rooms, that created a scene daily where guests would sit outside and get to know our family plus longtime friendships that evolved with 'neighbors'.
Our Dad passed away suddenly in 2004, at that point us 6 children did an extensive remodel project and renamed it Orchard Inn. A few years later we added the pavilion which was created to bring 'neighbors' together to again make friends which seems to happen daily.
Two of our sisters passed away from cancer. Mom died in 2023. It wasn't a difficult decision to keep the Inn in the family to continue the legacy our parents started. Four of the siblings now own Orchard Inn, with the support of Phyllis, Desiree and the entire staff we will continue the mission Mom and Dad started, a unique place of respite with cleanliness and friendliness as top priorities.
Thank you to our guests that choose us as your 'home away from home'. You are experiencing the legacy Mom and Dad would want to see continued for many years.
